DG’s DAS Program recently attended an event on creating a national digital public infrastructure (DPI) in Malawi in order to increase the impact of climate data to combat current and future agricultural issues caused by climate change. 'The Development Gateway Foundation announced today an agreement to collaborate with the French Development Agency (AFD) to publish its tenders online. The aid agency chose dgMarket, the foundation’s platform for online tenders, to publish tenders for all projects funded by AFD. It will include notices from 60 countries in three languages: French, Spanish, and English. In 2005, the French agency committed approximately $3.4 billion, primarily to countries in Africa and Asia.'
Knowing where aid projects are located is important for making smart allocation and evaluation decision - but to know what is actually happening on the ground, you can’t stop there.Typically, project implementers are the only ones with knowledge of detailed project information. While contracts also offer a wealth of data points - about who is implementing which activities where, and with how much money - most contracts are either not publicly available, or not easily downloadable.
Moving into 2019, we are pleased to be expanding RDI alongside our growing set of partners and funders. The program’s third phase focuses on agency-level engagement, and we will be scaling our partnerships with these development agencies to use results data to inform critical policy and programmatic decisions.

This report, six deep dives, and nine case studies provide user-centric approaches to data governance that places farmers and their communities at the center of data gathering initiatives and aims to reduce the negative effects of centralized power. The findings are based on literature, interviews, and workshops to gather the experiences of change-makers and aims to raise awareness around the current political economy of agricultural data and its implications; identify user-centric data governance models and mechanisms, particularly in LMICs; demonstrate the purpose, value, benefits, and challenges of these models for all stakeholders, and; identify appropriate and relevant actionable principles, recommendations, and considerations related to user-centric data governance in the agriculture sector for the donor community. This project is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
